Adding Value to what Really Matters

Adding Value to what Really Matters Adding Value to what Really Matters Every day you work to add value to your industry, your employer, your accomplishments, and your life and to find creative ways of delivering that value to others. No matter the receiver of that value, be it your team, customers, students, or an organization as a whole, the first step to succeeding in their eyes is to deliver a better value for their needs.A primary resource for the creative employee is to watch the actions of others, listen to their ideas and histories, and merge your ideas with the best of theirs to maximize your output. Using the Internet, you can study the lives and actions of people all over the world and in a seemingly infinite universe of varying occupations, lifestyles, and worldviews. Combining ideas that are already out there in the world in new ways can lead to novel products and services that generate real value for people. The key to creating value out of the copious resources alread y around us is to genuinely care about what you do and how it helps other people. Compete with the world in a way that requires you to deliver as much additional value as you can, every day. Apply the ways in which you care for your closest friends and family members to your everyday work. Observe the way people are cared for in places that you love to frequent and use those practices in how you approach others. Forget your title, your education, your employer, and your salary and focus on caring more about the details of your job and everything you do there in buchung to do it as well as you can.Find a purpose within your professional life. Your job is merely a set of tasks used to fulfill a larger purpose, but every action within the grand scheme generates positive and negative consequences for the larger organizational apparatus. In order to passionately care for what you do you must know why you do it and believe in that purpose. Caring about what you do and who you do it for re flects through the value of your work when you do the best you can every day.Part of recognizing the larger purpose of your work is to realize that no one works in isolation. Both directly and indirectly, the work of others is interwoven into your own efforts. You are part of a larger community, be it your organization, a professional, private, or public community, or the global marketplace and the only real value from your work comes from the benefits it effects upon other people within the larger picture. This value gives the hard work you dedicate to the details of your job the real meaning about which you can truly care or love.

This can be the fruchtwein important day of your monthThis can be the most important day of your monthAs the new year gets underway, many of us may be finding our ambitious resolutions hard to keep. How do we stay accountable to ourselves? How do we not get discouraged with setbacks? On the most recent episode of podcast Call Your Girlfriend, human rights technologistSabrina Hersi Issashared herbei solution on how not to succumb to the anxiety of getting your goals done in the first month of the year, while still staying accountable to personal progress.Issas pro-tip Take a personal inventory day each monthInstead of forcing a big goal into an arbitrary deadline like a New Years resolution, Issa suggests making goal-setting a part of your everyday lifestyle. If your dreams are important to you, dont disrespect them by cramming them into arbitrary new years resolutions or birthday deadlines, Issa says.To make her possibility model, where big goals can be executed successfully, Issa exp lains, she needed to set up systems and infrastructures in my life to support my ambitions.Issa does this by scheduling a monthly personal inventory day dedicated to my personal life maintenance like credit reports, doctors appointments, and goal planning. Multiple studies back up how practicing regular gratitude can boost our well-being and improve our moods by rewiring our anxious brains to pay attention to everyday joys. After enough time passes, Issa says, you should have lots of tracking data to review what youve learned so far, what are the moments each week that are sparking your curiosity, and where you need to improve. The bottom lineFor me, it allowed me to see what I was doing out of obligation or because I thought I should versus what I actually wanted to myself, Issa says. It allows me to free up the brain space I used to spend irrationally worrying. And now I get to reinvest that into time that I can make memories with my family and friends with.

do not cheat the one-page resume rule by using a tiny font and tiny margins

do not cheat the one-page resume rule by using a tiny font and tiny margins do not cheat the one-page resume rule by using a tiny font and tiny margins If youre early in your career, youve probably heard that your resume should only be one page. And perhaps youve tried to wiggle your way around that rule by using a tiny font and non-existent margins so that you can cram more text into one page.If youre done this, youreviolating the rule in spirit and probably making your resume less effective.(Before I go any further, let me clearly note that if youre at least midway into your career, the one-page resume rule doesnt apply to you. You get a second page at that point. But if youre only a few years out of school, you do indeed need to stick to one page.)Anyway, if youre trying to keep your resume to one page, you cantdo itby shrinking your font to the point that only people with a monocle can read itor by adjusting your margins so thattheres hardly any white space on the top, bottom, an d sides of the page. If you do things like that in an attempt to cheat your way into more space, (a) it will be totally obvious what you are doing, and (b) youll be doing it at the expense of how easy it is for a hiring manager to read. And you really, really want it to be easy for a hiring manager to read. Small, crowded text with no white space is hard to read and even harder to scan, which means that hiring managers eyes are likely to glaze over when they turn to your resume, which is the exact opposite of what you want. (And some hiring managers wont bother to endure the eye strain and will just go on to the next resume in their stack.)Plus, the one-page resume rule for early-career people is there for a reason. Its telling you what the appropriate amount of information for your resume is when youre only a few years out of school the amount that fits on a single page with normal margins. When you try to circumvent that with margin and font shenanigans, you end up looking likesome one who cant or wont edit. There are exceptions to every rule, of course - but far more people thinktheyre the exception to this than who actually are. If your experience is limited, youre better off being brutal about sticking to one page - with reasonable margins and a legible font size. What that means inpractical termsYour margins should be at least one inch on all four sides. You can probablyget away with going down to half an inch on the top and bottom if you absolutely must, but no smaller. Font size depends on the font, but in most cases anything smaller than 11 point risks being tough for some people to read, especially if theyre older. And line spaces are not your enemy. And yes, thatmight mean you have to pare things down. Consider what you really want the hiring manager to know and focus there.

Having baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to close

Having baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to closeHaving baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to closeWhen youre a woman planning a family, timing what age you decide to have a baby will have far-reaching consequences on your future earnings. Think carefully. There is a 10-year baby window that will put women in a pay gap from which they will never recover. This is a sobering calculation the New York Times found when they crunched the numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau on how the difference between a male-female couples earnings will widen after a first child is born.Having a baby between 25-35 costs working womenThe time between age 25 and 35 are prime professional years, where networks get built and careers get established. They are also the years where many couples decide to have children. This is a choice that penalizes women, but not their male partners. When women decided to have their first child during that 10-year window, their salaries never bounced back. Mea nwhile, women who chose to have a child before age 25 and after age 35 eventually close the gap. On average, women earned $12,600 less than their male partners before children were born and watched that number ersatzdarsteller to $25,100 less after a child was born. The transition to parenthood leads to a sharp and persistent increase in the gap between the earning of male and female spouses, driven by a decrease in the earnings of the female spouse, the U.S. Census Bureau concluded. Why were the other women able to overcome the gap? The Times suspected that it was because the gap was not as large to overcome for younger and older working mothers. Younger mothers were more likely to have lower salaries in general, and older mothers were only juggling the pay setback of one child.Low earners have a smaller pay gap in general, and people who have babies in their late 30s could have a smaller pay gap because they are less likely to have more than one child, the Times wrote.Subsidized chi ldcare would change thisWith each child, the pay gap grows. Since the 1980s, childless women have been out-earning working mothers.Economists have calculated that women with one child today will experience a 15% pay gap compared to childless women, while mothers with two kids will take a 13% pay gap hit, and mothers with three or more children will be making 20% less than childless women. To soften the blow of the motherhood penalty, women would need to gain back the time lost to taking care of their families. Taking care of children is expensive. The national average cost of childcare is almost $8,700 a year.Enter subsidized childcare. When you do not have to be home at all hours taking care of your child, you have more flexibility to be working. Its really, really, really clear, sociologist Joya Misra, who co-authored the pay gap study for women with multiple children, said. Universal subsidized childcare has the most important effect on reducing the motherhood penalty.

A royal career

A royal career A royal careerPosted July 24, 2013, by Julia WattersIts a boyThe son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is already being heralded by many as the future King of Australia. Now Ill admit that the royal family has softened on its formal duties in recent years, but the new prince will still be met with the responsibilities of royalty. It begs the question, how much influence do parents really have on their childrens career paths? If youre in the royal family, then its pretty much a done deal, but how about the rest of us? Family, specifically parents, are placed high on the list of social influences when it comes to choosing a university. Sometimes the influence is subtle but other times it can be screamingly obvious. Ive heard stories about students who have logged on to the UAC websiteto check their preferences, only to find the list completely different. Turns out their parents had decided that a career in law would be mora fruitful than the arts degree they had fa voured. I have also seen this firsthand at countless careers expos where parents have taken prospective guides for seemingly lesser degrees out of their childs hands, only to replace it with guides to what they considered to be more prestigious degrees. At the end of the day, the choice of career path should be left to the person who has to walk it. Sure, certain degrees are considered by some to look better on paper, but the only paper you should be concerned with is your transcript. If you choose something you are truly passionate about, it will reflect in your marks. So regardless of whether lawis your love, teachingis your trade or designis your destiny, decide on a course thats right for you. Reapplying for a Job After a Merger or Restructuring

Reapplying for a Job After a Merger or RestructuringReapplying for a Job After a Merger or RestructuringEmployees can be shocked when they find themselves in the position of having to reapply for a job they already have. Its especially difficult when there isnt advance notice and a group of employees, an entire department, or even fruchtwein of the employees at a company are told that they can choose between a layoff and a new job at their present employer if they can get hired for one. Why Companies Ask Employees to Reapply It is not uncommon for employers to formally ask all or some of their current staff to reapply for a job after a merger or acquisition. It can also happen when a company is downsizing, layoffs are planned, and there will be a limited number of new positions. In this case, current employees will have to compete for one of the job openings that will be available. Another reason for asking employees to reapply is that it precludes discrimination issues that coul d occur if an employer decides to keep some employees and not others during a restructuring. Starting over with rehiring enables the company to give all current employees an opportunity to apply and, in theory, enables the company to keep the best-qualified employees on board. How to Handle Reapplying The most common employee reaction is anger, frustration or disbelief, but its important not to share your reactions with the company if you plan on reapplying for your old job or a new one at the company. Here are some tips for handling this difficult situation in the best possible manner Share your understandable feelings with a partner, friend or counselor outside of work as often as necessary. While at work be careful not to air your frustrations with anyone in either an overt or subtle way. Your employer will favor employees who will have a positive attitude and will add to team morale in the new configuration.Do not assume that your employer knows all about your accomplishments . Some of your achievements may have occurred under the radar and there may be new decision makers who dont know you involved in the evaluation of candidates. Dont presume youll get the job. There may be a limited number of openings and, regardless of how well you did at your other job, there is no guarantee you will be the candidate selected for the new one.Construct your resume with an emphasis on the value that you have added to the company through various accomplishments. Whenever possible, quantify your results and note the skills, knowledge and personal qualities which have enabled you to generate those successes.Write a detailed cover letter which points out your core assets for the job and clearly expresses your enthusiasm for continuing with the reconfigured organization. If the job is different from your current role, make it clear how the new responsibilities are attractive and suitable. Also, be clear how you are qualified to handle them.Immediately start doing anything extra, such as working late or volunteering for a challenging project, that will prove your strong work ethic and positive attitude.Solidify relationships with any managers who might be in line to supervise you in your new job. These connections within the company can help boost your chances of getting rehired. Even if you eventually plan to leave because the new structure is not to your liking, follow the aforementioned strategies so that you can move on your own timing without an employment gap. Deciding Not to Reapply Of course, you arent obligated to reapply and, in some cases, it can be hard to get over the hard feelings and to see the company and your new role in it in a positive light. However, even if your employer is offering an attractive severance package and you are confident that you can quickly find a better job, make sure that you leave on good terms.
